Styling Curly Hair Techniques and Tips

Curly hair is beautiful, it's unique, and it's character-rich, but it also requires the right techniques and products to allow it to become the best version of itself. If you're new to the curly hair world or looking to elevate your current routine, having the basics of curly hair care and styling down can be a total game-changer. Below, we'll cover everything from how to wash correctly to the best styling methods to maintain healthy, defined, and frizz-less locks.

Styling Techniques for Curly Hair

Achieving perfect curls is not just about what products you use, but also about how you use them. Good technique will keep your curly hair defined, bouncy, and frizz-free. Try these styling techniques to get the most out of your favorite products, including shampoo, deep conditioner, and leave-in conditioner.

1. The Smooth & Scrunch Technique

One of the easiest techniques of product application is the smooth and scrunch technique. Start with damp hair and take a small amount of your favorite leave-in conditioner or curl-defining product. Rub it between your palms and smooth it over sections of your hair using flat palms, as if you were clapping them together in prayer.

After distributing the product evenly, scrunch your curls from the ends to the roots. This will define your curls while hydrating and enhancing your natural curl pattern.

2. The Raking Method

This technique is ideal for those with denser or thicker curls. Scoop a good amount of leave-in conditioner into the palms of your hands and, with your fingers, rake the product through your hair section by section. Your hands should be shaped like a claw so that the product is applied to each strand from root to tip.

For wavy hair or looser curls, finish off by scrunching your hair upwards to enhance a tighter curl pattern. This method ensures even distribution while adding volume and shape.

3. The Layering Method

and the amount of product you use rather than just the application technique. Start by taking half the amount of styling product that you normally use—whether that's a leave-in, deep conditioner, or curl cream—and apply it with the smooth & scrunch or raking method.

Allow your hair to air dry or diffuse it to around 50% dryness. Next, dampen your hands slightly, take the rest of the product, and gently apply it over your curls. Rewet your hands if your hair begins to feel sticky before resuming. Complete by drying your curls thoroughly with a diffuser or air drying. This method works particularly well for wavy or loose curls since it preserves moisture without weighing your hair down.

4- The Rope & Scrunch Technique

Divide your curly hair into tiny sections for best results with this method. Gently take a small amount of styling gel or leave-in conditioner and rub it against the palms. Now, clamp each section of hair like clenching a rope and scrunch from roots to ends in a gentle pressing manner to dispense the product all over evenly.

Once you’ve applied the product throughout your hair, finish by scrunching each section to lock in definition and enhance your curls. This method is particularly effective for curls that need extra structure and hold.

Tips for perfect styling on your washday

The secret to any great curly hair routine starts in the shower. Choosing the right curly hair shampoo and conditioner is essential. Regular shampoos include sulfates, which strip away natural oils and leave your hair dry and prone to breakage. Use a sulfate-free curly hair-formulated shampoo to wash instead, which cleans without stripping moisture away.

How to Wash Curly Hair the Right Way:

Shower with lukewarm water, getting your hair very wet. Frizz and dryness result from using hot water.

Use a little bit of sulfate-free shampoo on your scalp and gently massage to cleanse. Avoid rubbing against the hair lengths, as they can become tangled.

Rinse thoroughly and then condition to replace moisture lost.

Wash your curls no more than 2-3 times a week to avoid drying out your hair.

For a deeper hydration, use a deep curly hair conditioner once a week to replace moisture and strengthen your curls. If your hair tends to dry quickly, adding a leave-in conditioner will maintain it soft and manageable between shampoos.

Detangle Without Damaging Your Curls

Detangling curly hair should be done delicately in order not to cause breakage. Detangle with your hair still wet and filled with conditioner.

How to Correctly Detangle Curly Hair

Employ the use of a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush.

Start at the ends and detangle your way up towards the roots to protect against breakage.

For additional slip, add a leave-in conditioner to render detangling all the easier.

Don't use a brush on dry curls because it can frizz and disrupt the natural curl pattern.

Style with Products for Defined Curls

Curly hair styling is all about sealing in moisture and defining your curls without the weight. The right combination of styling products will have your curls perfect all day long.

How to Style Curly Hair

Since your hair is still damp, apply a leave-in conditioner to hydrate your curls.

Section your hair and distribute the product evenly with your fingers or brush.

Apply a curl cream, mousse, or light gel to define curls and eliminate frizz.

Scrunch your curls up to allow your natural curl pattern to develop.

Air-dry your hair or dry it using a diffuser on low heat to speed up drying.
